I’m not sure classifying Why Can’t I Be You as chick-lit is exactly fair. After all, her boyfriend-soon-to-be-fiancé just left her for a girl equally average and plain – not even an upgrade, which was more insulting than anything else. When the opportunity presented itself, she jumped at it and never looked back. Our own skin can get too tight, and wanting to escape it makes sense in some situations. Who of us wouldn’t want to be someone else, at least for a day? There were days when I just wanted to leave everything behind and become someone new, someone daring and social, someone who took chances on every turn or at least someone who felt comfortable in their skin. There was something about the retro-looking cover that pulled me in right away, and the idea of stepping into someone else’s shoes so completely both thrilled and intrigued me. Somehow, I feel that I’ve outgrown chick-lit ages ago (it’s funny how I’ll never really outgrow YA, though), but when an opportunity arose to review Why Can’t I Be You by Allie Larkin, I felt an immediate connection and jumped at the chance to do so. Ewing s compelling prose makes his book read like entertainment more than education, and the story of Volkswagen s fall how the company cheated emissions-testing devices, was exposed by West Virginia University researchers, and, finally, was publicly cited by the EPA is a study in corporate hubris. The challenge for regulators lay in both measuring dangerous emissions and working out how to apply those measurements to a wide variety of cars and the conditions under which they are driven. Fast-forward to the 21st century, when new environmental concerns put a damper on this rapid growth. Most interesting to many readers will be Volkswagen s genesis as the people s car, a Nazi propaganda tactic and particular pet project of Hitler s that was intended to showcase Germany s coming prosperity. Ewing creates a compelling narrative out of corporate history, tracing Volkswagen s growth from 1937 to the present to show the evolution of a strikingly top-down, hierarchical culture. New York Times reporter Ewing has written a fascinating expos of Volkswagen s rise to becoming the world s largest auto maker, a goal the company reached in 2015 just months before scandal broke over its emissions fraud. In the Treasury for Children there are eight “warm and joyful tales” – as described on the cover of the book – written by James Heriot just for children and young readers. Eight “warm and joyful tales” by James Herriot for children I had read most of his semi-autobiographical books about his life as a vet in North Yorkshire but never knew he had written and adapted stories for children. The Treasury for Children is a compilation in one volume of eight storybooks written by James Herriot for children. Would my children like it? Would it be a good introduction to the vet’s tales of farmyard animals and country living? Would the stories be too dated? But I hadn’t seen this one before – James Herriot’s Treasury for Children. Actually that was his pen name as his real name was James Alfred “Alf” Wight (1916-1995). Yes, I’m talking about the best selling author James Herriot. When I looked through the pages memories came streaming back of reading the books by this author when I was younger – All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing. I smiled as I pulled out a large book from a box filled with children’s books once owned by my nephew and nieces. Despite the magic and spacecraft, Vaughan writes and Staples inks to life a universe that looks, in many ways, like our own. Former enemies turn into reluctant allies, and then beloved family members. (Issue #50 is out this week.) Characters who might seem like one-note tropes-the jilted ex, the jaded gun-for-hire-become far more complicated. Vaughan have lent humanity to their entire ensemble. Yet over the dozens of issues released since Saga’s 2012 debut, co-creators Fiona Staples and Brian K. The story begins with Alana, Marko, and their newborn daughter, Hazel-a taboo, inter-species refugee family fleeing the intergalactic war between their home worlds. In short, Saga can seem bewildering but at its core are simpler themes of love, loss, and growth. In one scene, readers meet an assassin with the armless body of Venus de Milo when she casts aside her skirt, she reveals the abdomen of a spider and eight legs clutching different weapons. And there’s a drunken cyclops who writes trashy romance novels, but may secretly be the galaxy’s leading intellectual. There’s a queer, disemboweled ghost who works nights as a sassy teenage babysitter. There’s a telepathic, bald cat who yowls “LYING” at people who don’t tell the truth.
